Halloween Origins and Legends
The origins of Halloween can be traced back to the traditional holiday of the ancient Celts.
1. Celtic traditions
The origins of Halloween can be traced back to the traditional holiday of the ancient Celts. The Celts were an ancient people living in Europe who believed that on October 31st of each year, the end of summer and the beginning of winter, ghosts would return to earth. To welcome these ghosts, the Celts would hold a series of rituals and celebrations. Included in these activities were the wearing of ghostly masks and costumes, and the decorating of houses with pumpkin lamps. These traditional practices have continued to this day and have become the main way of celebrating Halloween in modern times.
2. Christian festivals
When Christianity began to spread in Europe, the church tried to incorporate ghost-related holidays into the religious festivals. Thus, they designated October 31 as All Saints' Day to honor those ghosts and holy saints who appeared in the New Testament. On this day, the church would perform special rituals and masses to drive away evil spirits and invoke divine protection. These rituals were gradually accepted by the people and evolved into modern day celebrations.
